The Hon. Carol A. Cocchiola is a judge for the Binghamton City Court in Broome County in the Sixth Judicial District of New York. She was originally appointed to the City Court by Binghamton Mayor Richard C. David in 2014 and was subsequently elected to the City Court bench the following year. At the time of her appointment, Judge Cocchiola filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Mary Anne Lehmann (Ret.).
Judge Cocchiola received her B.S. from Duquesne University in 1980. She went on to earn her J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law in 1985.
Cocchiola joined the Broome County District Attorney’s Office in 1987, where she served as a criminal prosecutor until 1990 when she then began serving as a senior assistant district attorney. During her tenure with the D.A.’s office, Cocchiola handled all stages of felony cases beginning from the initial investigation through the jury trial and beyond the verdict.
She joined the New York State Attorney General’s Office as an assistant attorney general in 1998, and by 2012 she was serving as the deputy assistant attorney general in charge of the Binghamton Office. After representing New York State agencies in federal and state courts as an assistant attorney general, her new position expanded to include serving as a supervisor to attorneys, investigators, and other staff members of the A.G.’s office.
Cocchiola has served as a past director and member of the Broome County Bar Association and as past president of the board of directors of the Action for Older Persons. She has also served on the board of directors of the Southern Tier Law Enforcement Memorial Association and past chair of the board of directors of the Broome County Family Violence Prevention Council.
