Hon. Caryn A. Datz is a judge for the 17th Judicial District Court of Colorado. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Hickenlooper in 2018, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Thomas R. Ensor (Ret.).
The 17th Judicial District includes Adams and Broomfield Counties.
During her judicial tenure, Datz has presided over criminal and domestic relations matters.
Prior to her appointment, Datz worked as a chief trial deputy and senior deputy district attorney with the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, where she served as head of the Sex Assault Unit since 2017. Before that, she was a chief trial deputy and a deputy district attorney with the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Datz received a B.A. in Spanish and English from the University of Miami in 1998. She went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Miami School of Law in 2001.
After graduating from law school, Datz began her legal career as an assistant public defender with the Office of the Public Defender in the 11th District of Florida.
She is a graduate of the Colorado Bar Association Leadership Training (2017) and has taught as an adjunct professor at Colorado Law.
At the time of her appointment, Datz resided in Broomfield, Colorado.
