The Hon. Kristine R. DeMay is a judge for the 9th Judicial District Court of Minnesota. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Tim Pawlenty on January 2, 2008.
The 9th Judicial District includes Aitkin County, Beltrami County, Cass County, Clearwater County, Crow Wing County, Hubbard County, Itasca County, Kittson County, Koochiching County, Lake of the Woods County, Mahnomen County, Marshall County, Norman County, Pennington County, Polk County, Red Lake County, and Roseau County.
Prior to her appointment, DeMay was an assistant county attorney for the Crow Wing County Attorney’s Office, a position to which she was named in 1997. Before that, she spent a year as an attorney at Fitzpatrick, Nelson & Ten Eyck, supplementing her practice with service as an assistant city attorney for the City of Brainerd (1996 to 1997).
DeMay earned a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University in 1990. She then completed a J.D. at Hamline University School of Law in 1995.
After graduating from law school, DeMay began her legal career with the Washington County Public Defender’s Office in 1995. However, her time there was brief. Later that year, she became a law clerk to the 7th Judicial District Court in Detroit Lakes.
Her memberships have included the Minnesota State Bar Association, the Minnesota District Judges Association, the Minnesota Children’s Justice Initiative, and the Crow Wing County Bar Association. She has also been involved with the Crow Wing County Drug Court, the Crow Wing County Methamphetamine Coalition, and the Minnesota County Attorneys Association.
