The Hon. Michael P. Hurly is a judge for the North Dakota Northeast Judicial District. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Doug Burgum on August 1, 2017, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John C. McClintock, Jr.
The Northeast Judicial District includes Benson County, Bottineau County, Cavalier County, McHenry County, Pembina County, Pierce County, Ramsey County, Renville County, Rolette County, Towner County, and Walsh County.
Hurly earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from North Dakota State University in 2000. He then completed a J.D. at the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2005.
After graduating from law school, he began his legal career as a law clerk to the 16th Judicial District Court of Montana. He served in that capacity until 2007, at which time he entered into private practice as a partner at the Traynor Law Firm in Devils Lake. Hurly supplemented his practice with service as a city attorney for St. John, a city prosecutor for Devils Lake, and an assistant state’s attorney for Ramsey, Benson, and Nelson counties.
