The Hon. Ruth M. Acheson is a judge for the Mineral County Court in Colorado. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Hickenlooper on August 30, 2012, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Frank Stannard Lentz.
Prior to her appointment, Acheson was a sole practitioner in her own private practice, a law firm she opened in 2004. In that capacity, she specialized in guardian ad litem matters, supplementing her practice with service as a municipal judge for the Town of Creede (2005 to 2013).
Acheson earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology from the University of Colorado in 1976. She then completed a J.D. at Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 1981.
Shortly after graduating from law school, Acheson began working as a deputy public defender for the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office in 1985.
Her memberships have included the 12th Judicial District’s Best Practices in Child Welfare Committee and the San Luis Valley Family Treatment Court Team. As a member of these groups, she has worked to develop a judicial protocol to address the concerns of the Domestic Violence Offender Accountability Committee.
