Hon. Terrance A. Keith is a judge for the Wayne County Probate Court in Michigan. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jennifer Granholm in December 2010, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. David J. Szymanski (Ret.).
Prior to his appointment, Keith was the chief deputy treasurer for Wayne County. Before his position there, he worked as a principal attorney for the Wayne County Department of Corporation Counsel. Keith started there as an assistant corporation counsel. He was also a shareholder at Kemp Klein Umphrey & Edelman, PC, where his practice included bankruptcy and municipal law.
He received a B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1976. Keith went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Detroit, Mercy School of Law in 1984. He also holds a certificate from Harvard University, Kennedy School, and is a graduate of Leadership Detroit.
Keith was admitted to practice in Michigan (1985), the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (1985), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit (1985).
He served on the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly, the State Bar Board of Commissioners, and the State Bar Attorney Discipline Hearing Panel.
Keith was also a founding father and past president of the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association, which was founded in 1990. In addition, he was a past president of the Association of Black Judges of Michigan.
At the time of his appointment, he resided in Detroit, Michigan.
