Hon. Tyria B. Walton is a judge for the Cook County Circuit Court in Illinois. She was appointed to the Circuit Court by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2019 and was elected to the seat the following year.
While on the bench, Walton has held an assignment in the Fourth Municipal District of the Municipal Department.
She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Walton went on to complete a J.D. at Loyola University, Chicago School of Law in 1997.
After working briefly as a sole practitioner, Walton served the bulk of her legal career as an assistant public defender with the Cook County Public Defender’s Office, where she defended first-degree murder cases.
Her memberships have included the Illinois State Bar Association, the Capital Litigation Trial Bar, the Cook County Bar Association, the Civil Rights Black Women Lawyers Association, the NAACP, and the Community Service National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
From a civic standpoint, Walton served as president of the Block Club in Englewood and as a member of the Resident Association of Greater Englewood.
She enjoys roller skating and cooking and is also a jazz enthusiast.
Walton is registered as a Democrat.
