The Hon. Barry McHugh is a judge for the 1st Judicial District Court of Idaho. He was elected to the bench in 2022.
The 1st Judicial District includes Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai, and Shoshone Counties. McHugh has held an assignment in Kootenai County.
Prior to his election, he was the Prosecuting Attorney for Kootenai County since 2009. Before that, McHugh was a partner at Elsaesser Jarzabek Anderson Marks Elliott & McHugh (2002 to 2008). He joined the firm after working for eleven years as an Assistant United States Attorney with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Idaho (1991 to 2002). McHugh also served as a prosecutor for the City of Coeur d’Alene.
He received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Boise State University in 1980. McHugh then completed a J.D. at the University of Idaho College of Law in 1985.
He served on the Board of Directors of the Idaho Association of Counties, the Idaho Prosecuting Attorney’s Association (past Board President), the Safe Passage Violence Protection Center, and the Child Advocacy Center (past Board President). McHugh was also a past president of the Coeur d’Alene Rotary Club.
He received the Civil Rights Award from the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations in 2011 for his work in prosecuting hate crimes.
A native of Kootenai County, McHugh and his wife, Teresa, have three children.
