The Hon. Brian P. Stern is an associate justice for the Rhode Island Superior Court. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Donald Carcieri on August 21, 2009.
Stern currently presides over the Providence County Business Calendar. He is also temporarily in charge of the Out-County Business Calendar in Courtroom No. 4D in Kent County.
Prior to his appointment, Stern was the Chief of Staff to the Government of Rhode Island, a position to which he was named in 2007. Before that, he was the Executive Director and Purchasing Agent (2005 to 2007) and Executive Counsel (2004 to 2005) for the State of Rhode Island Department of Administration. He also spent time as Deputy Chief of Legal Services (2000 to 2004) and Chief Securities Examiner (1998 to 2000) for the State of Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation.
Stern earned a bachelor’s degree in government from Clark University in 1988. He then completed a J.D. at Brooklyn Law School in 1991.
After graduating from law school, Stern entered into private practice, working as an associate at Kanterman, Taub & Breitner in New York. During this time, he handled insurance coverage and insurance defense matters. Then, in 1993, he became a founding partner of Stern and Gonzalez.
His memberships have included the Board of Directors of the Roger Williams University School of Law.
