The Hon. Cheryl M. Long (Ret.) is a senior associate judge for the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Long was appointed to the bench by former President Ronald Reagan on May 26, 1988. She assumed senior status in 2009.
Over the course of her judicial career, Long held assignments as the Presiding Judge for the Probate Division and the Tax Division. She also chaired the Rules Advisory Committee and the Interpreters Committee.
Prior to her appointment, Long was the director of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, a position to which she was named in 1985. Before that, she spent time as a staff attorney for the Division of Land and Natural Resources at the United States Department of Justice (1982 to 1985).
Long earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University in 1971. She then completed a J.D. at Georgetown University Law Center in 1974.
After graduating from law school, Long began her legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Spottswood Robinson of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She served in that capacity until 1975, at which time she joined the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia.
Her memberships have included the Washington Bar Association and the National Association of Women Judges. She has also been involved with the Women’s Committee of Washington Performing Arts.
Long was raised in the District of Columbia, where she attended Bunker Hill Elementary School, Taft Junior High School, Backus Junior High School, and Coolidge High School.
