The Hon. Daniel E. Butcher is a magistrate on the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. He was appointed to the bench by the judges of the Southern District of California on May 26, 2020.
Prior to his appointment, Butcher was an Assistant United States Attorney with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California, a position to which he was named in 1995.
Butcher earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego, in 1985. He then completed a J.D. at Cornell Law School in 1989.
After graduating from law school, Butcher began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Rudi Brewster of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. He served in that capacity until 1990, at which time he entered into private practice in San Diego.
