Hon. Elizabeth A. Weishaupl (Ret.) was a judge for the 18th Judicial District Court of Colorado. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Bill Ritter in 2008. Weishaupl retired on January 10, 2023.
The 18th Judicial District includes Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, and Lincoln Counties. During her judicial tenure, her caseload included criminal, civil, domestic relations, and mental health matters.
Prior to her appointment, she served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado since 2001. During her tenure there, Weishaupl spent time as an ethics officer.
Before joining the Department of Justice, she worked as an assistant attorney general II in the Public Official Unit of the Colorado Attorney General’s Office since 1996, where she represented state elected and appointed public officials. Weishaupl, who specialized in Constitutional litigation, first joined the office as an assistant attorney general in the Education Unit in 1994.
She received a bachelor of music and a B.A. in history from the University of Denver. Weishaupl went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law in 1989.
After graduating from law school, she began her legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Howard Kirshbaum with the Colorado Supreme Court. Weishaupl then entered private practice as an associate at a boutique litigation firm in Colorado, where she remained until joining the Attorney General’s Office in 1994.
She participated in Our Courts and We the People programs and taught at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy Training. Weishaupl also taught at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law; the Community College of Aurora; the Arapahoe Community College; and the Community Colleges OnLine. In addition, she lectured on Evidence, Ethics, Trial Advocacy, and Bankruptcy at continuing legal education programs for the American Judge’s Association, the Colorado Bar Association, the Arapahoe County Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the Colorado Women’s Bar Association.
Weishaupl, a third-generation native Coloradoan, was raised in Littleton, where she attended Littleton High School.
