Hon. Elizabeth B. Volz is a judge for the 18th Judicial District Court of Colorado. She was appointed to the bench in 2011.
The 18th Judicial District includes Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, and Lincoln Counties. Volz presides over civil matters on the bench.
Prior to beginning her judicial career, she was senior counsel at Campbell, Killin, Brittan & Ray, LLC and taught as an adjunct professor for the University of Guam and Metropolitan State College, where her subjects included penology, constitutional law, and evidence.
Before joining the firm, Volz served as an assistant attorney general assigned to the Special Prosecution Unit of the Colorado Attorney General’s Office (1996 to 1999), an assistant attorney general with the Maryland Attorney General’s Office (1987 to 1995), and a chief prosecutor (1985 to 1987) for the Territory of Guam, where she began as a prosecutor. She also spent four years as an assistant public defender in Charleston, South Carolina.
Volz received a bachelor’s degree in English from Hartwick College in 1976. She went on to complete a J.D. at Albany Law School in 1979. Volz was admitted to practice in Colorado (1995), New York (1980), Maryland (1980), the United States District Court for the District of Colorado (1980), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Volz chaired the governor’s task force on child sexual abuse in the 80s, helping to establish protocols for the investigation, prosecution, and sentencing of those suspected of committing the offenses. She also provided training for police academies, crime labs, the DEA, and the EPA. Volz was also a member of the Rotary Club and has been a participant in the Our Schools program.
She is also an active member of her church.
