The Hon. Fred J. Anthony is a judge for the Shelton Probate Court (Division 42) in Fairfield County, Connecticut. He was elected to the bench in 1994.
Anthony sits as the Administrative Judge for the Waterbury Regional Children’s Probate Court. He has also served as the President-Judge of the Connecticut Probate Assembly (2008 to 2010). During this time, the State of Connecticut overhauled the probate court system, consolidating the number of probate courts from 117 to 54.
Prior to his election, Anthony served as assistant corporation counsel for the City of Shelton Office of Corporation Counsel (1991 to 1995). Then, in 1992, he opened his own private practice alongside Matthew C. Reale, a classmate from law school. They specialized in criminal defense; probate, wills, and estates; and dissolution of marriage and family law matters.
Anthony earned a bachelor’s degree from Providence College in 1986. He then completed a J.D. at Villanova University, Charles Widger School of Law in 1989. He is admitted to practice in Connecticut, the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut, and the United States Supreme Court.
His memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Connecticut Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association, the Milford Bar Association, and the Lower Naugatuck Valley Bar Association (president).
Born and raised in Shelton, Connecticut, Anthony attended Shelton High School. His father, George Anthony, served as a Lieutenant for the Shelton Police Department, and his mother worked as a secretary for an insurance firm. When not presiding over legal matters, Anthony, a father of three children, enjoys boating on Lake Housatonic.
