The Hon. G. Michael Harvey is a magistrate judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He was appointed to the bench on February 13, 2015.
Prior to his appointment, Harvey worked with the United States Department of Justice since 1997. He began as a trial attorney in the National Courts Section before joining the Civil Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia in 1999. Then, in 2003, Harvey moved to the Criminal Division before spending his last seven and half years in the office’s National Security Section, where he prosecuted high-profile cases involving espionage, terrorism, export violations, alien smuggling, unauthorized disclosure of classified information, threats against high-ranking officials, and cybercrime.
He received a B.A. in political science from Duke University in 1989. Harvey then completed a J.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, Carey Law School in 1993. While a law student, he sat as editor of the Law Review.
After graduating from law school, Harvey began his legal career as an associate at Wiley, Rein & Fielding in Washington, D.C., where he remained until 1997.
