The Hon. George D. Varoutsos (Ret.) was a judge for the 17th Judicial District Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court of Virginia. He was elected to the bench by the Virginia General Assembly in 1998. Varoutsos retired in 2021.
The 17th Judicial District includes Arlington County and the City of Falls Church.
Prior to his election, he sat for two years as a substitute judge for the Arlington County Circuit Court and was in private practice since 1974. Varoutsos began his legal career as a clerk for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond in 1970. Varoutsos then completed a J.D. at the University of Richmond School of Law in 1973.
A past president of the Arlington Bar Association, he received its Distinguished Service Award in 2003. Varoutsos is also the recipient of the William T. Newman Jr. Spirit of Community Award from the Arlington Community Foundation (2010) and the William L. Winston Award from the Arlington Bar Foundation (2019).
A married father of one child, Varoutsos hoped to continue his tradition of attending NFL Super Bowls. At the time of his retirement, he was looking forward to his 32nd consecutive Super Bowl. Varoutsos also enjoys traveling and spending time with his grandson, Georgie.
A native of Arlington, Virginia, he attended Yorktown High School and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2004.
