Judge Gordon C. Murray - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Gordon C. Murray is a judge for the Miami-Dade County Courtin Florida. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Rick Scott in 2017, filling the vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Lourdes Simon to the 11th Judicial Circuit Court.

While on the bench, Murray has held assignments in the County Civil and Criminal Divisions.

Prior to his appointment, he served as a magistrate in the 11th Judicial Circuit since being appointed to the position in 2012. As such, Murray held an assignment in the Family Division and also served as a child support hearing officer.

He attended the University of Miami, where he received a B.A. in politics and public administration in 1982. Murray went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Miami School of Law in 1985.

After law school, he joined the Office of the State Attorney for the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit in Monroe County, where he served as an assistant state attorney until moving to the State Attorney’s Office in Miami-Dade County in 1989. During his tenure there, Murray prosecuted felony crimes while working under then-Florida State Attorney Janet Reno.

He left public service in 1993 to enter into solo practice at his own law firm. Murray continued in solo practice for nineteen years. In addition to this, he also served as a general magistrate and child support hearing officer (1998 to 1999) and a civil traffic hearing officer (1999 to 2002) in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit and was a special magistrate for the City of Miami (2009 to 2010).

He has taught constitutional law, criminal law, and juvenile delinquency as an adjunct professor at Miami-Dade College since 1995.

His memberships include the National Black Law Student Association and the Wilkie Ferguson Jr. Bar Association. He also served as senior warden of the King James #5 Association of A.M. and F.M. Lodges, Inc. and was president of the board of Orchestra Miami, Inc.

Some of his awards include the Pro Bono Service Award from the Florida Bar (2010), the Augustus Witherspoon Leadership Award from the Florida Federation of Alpha Chapters (2011), and the Miami-Dade County Community Pillar Award from the Miami-Dade Black Heritage Committee.

Murray moved to Miami, Florida, with his family at a young age and considers himself to be a Miami native. He and his wife have two children, both of whom also pursued legal careers.
