Hon. Hiram A. Carpenter, III (Ret.) is a senior judge for the Blair County Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania. He was elected to the bench in 1989 and was retained to the seat in 1999 and 2009. Carpenter retired in 2012 and subsequently assumed senior status in January 2013.
Carpenter received a B.A. from Dickinson College in 1969. He went on to complete a J.D. at George Washington University Law School in 1973.
Prior to his election to the Court of Common Pleas, he had worked as an attorney in the law firm of Casanave & Carpenter since graduating from law school (1973 to 1989).
His memberships have included the Pennsylvania Trial Judges Association (past president), the Jeremiah S. Black American Inn of Court (past president), and the Blair County Bar Association.
Carpenter and his wife, Dana Marie Montgomery, have six children. He is an avid sports fan, and though he is not an alumnus of West Virginia University, he regularly attends the Mountaineers football games.
His family history can be traced back to St. Mary, West Virginia, where his grandfather, Hiram A. Carpenter, worked as a businessman and later became the namesake for the Hiram A. Carpenter Bridge which spans across the Ohio River, connecting West Virginia to Ohio.
Carpenter was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania and raised in Coraopolis. He served for several years in the United States Army Reserves (1969 to 1975).
