The Hon. J. Gregory Ashwell (Ret.) served as a judge for the 20th Judicial District Court of Virginia. Ashwell was elected to the bench by the Virginia General Assembly in 2011. He retired on January 1, 2021, and opened Ashwell & Ashwell alongside his son, William D. Ashwell.
The 20th Judicial District encompasses Fauquier, Loudoun, and Rappahannock Counties.
Prior to his election, Ashwell was a judge for the 20th Judicial District Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, a position to which he was named in 2007.
Ashwell earned a B.A. in economics from Old Dominion University and an M.Ed. from the University of Virginia. He then completed a J.D. at George Mason University, Antonin Scalia Law School.
He is licensed to practice in Virginia (1982), the District of Columbia (1982), the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia (1982), the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit (1982), the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia (1982), and the United States Supreme Court.
After graduating from law school, Ashwell entered into private practice in Warrenton. He worked in that capacity until 1989, at which time he joined the Fauquier County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
