The Hon. James B. Foy is a judge for the 6th Judicial District Court of New Mexico. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on February 27, 2019, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. J.C. Robinson.
The 6th Judicial District includes Grant County, Luna County, and Hidalgo County.
Prior to his appointment, Foy was an attorney in private practice, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal courts. He started as an associate at Foy, Foy & Jollensten. A few years later, he was named partner at Foy, Foy & Castillo. Foy also spent time as the District Attorney for the 6th Judicial District (1997 to 2004).
Foy earned a bachelor’s degree from Creighton University in 1983. He then completed a J.D. at the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1986.
His memberships have included the Board of Directors of El Grito Head Start. He has also coached Little League Boys Baseball, Little League Girls Softball, and Cobre Youth Wrestling.
Born in Silver City, New Mexico, Foy was raised in Bayard, where he attended St. Mary’s Academy and Cobre High School. He is the youngest son of Thomas P. Foy, a former member of the New Mexico State House of Representatives, and Joan C. Foy, former Grant County Democratic Chairperson and master bridge player. Foy and his wife, Valvina, were married at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. They have two children.
He is registered as a Democrat.
