Hon. James Berkley Boyd is a judge for the 9th Judicial District Court of Colorado. He was appointed to the bench in 2002.
The 9th Judicial District includes the Garfield, Pitkin, and Rio Blanco Counties.
During his judicial tenure, Boyd served as the Chief Judge of the 9th Judicial District (2006 to 2023) and a judge for Division 5 of the Water Court since 2009. In addition to his water cases, he has also presided over criminal prosecutions, domestic relations and probate litigation, civil and commercial lawsuits, and juvenile matters.
Prior to his appointment, Boyd specialized in civil litigation, including real estate disputes and family law as a private practice attorney for twenty-two years. He spent the bulk of this time at Holland & Hart, LLP before opening his own law firm.
Boyd received a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Denver. He went on to complete a J.D. at Stanford Law School in 1981. While a law student, Boyd sat as editor of the Law Review.
Boyd was admitted to practice in Colorado (1981), the United States District Court for the District of Colorado (1981), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit (1982).
He was president and treasurer of the Pitkin County Bar Association and a delegate to the Colorado Bar Association Board of Governors. Boyd also sat on the Colorado Supreme Court’s Colorado Problem Solving Court Advisory Committee (chair).
