The Hon. James T. Bryan, III (Ret.) served as a judge for the 15B Judicial District Court of North Carolina. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Bev Perdue in 2012, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Page Vernon. Bryan retired in 2020 and opened Jay Bryan Consulting and Mediation, LLC.
The 15B Judicial District encompasses Orange County and Chatham County.
Bryan earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University. He then completed a J.D. at North Carolina Central University School of Law. He was licensed to practice in North Carolina in 1978.
After graduating from law school, Bryan entered into private practice. He worked in that capacity until his appointment to the bench, handling transactions, criminal defense, personal injury, family, abuse and neglect, criminal, and involuntary commitment matters.
His memberships have included the Carrboro Board of Aldermen and the Orange County Planning Board.
