The Hon. John A. Bielec is an associate judge for the Prince George’s County District Court in Maryland. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Larry Hogan on March 26, 2020.
Bielec has held assignments on the Court of Appeals Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Service.
Prior to his appointment, Bielect worked for the Office of General Counsel for the United States Government Accountability Office. He started as a senior attorney in 2002, rising through the ranks to become deputy assistant general counsel (2004) and assistant general counsel for litigation (2008).
Bielec earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1988. He then completed a J.D. at the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in 1991.
After graduating from law school, Bielec began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. William H. McCullough of the Prince George’s County Circuit Court. He served in that capacity until 1992, at which time he became an associate at O’Malley & Miles. Then, in 1993, Bielec joined the Prince George’s County Attorney’s Office. He spent the next several years as an associate county attorney (1993 to 1999) and deputy county attorney for major litigation (1999 to 2002).
He is admitted to practice in Maryland (1991), the United States District Court for the District of Maryland (1992), the District of Columbia (1993), the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit (1995), the United States District Court for the District of Columbia (1998), and the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia (2002).
His memberships have included the Prince George’s County Bar Association and the Marlborough American Inn of Court. He also served on the Attorney Grievance Commission (2001 to 2020) and the Contract Appeals Board of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (2013 to 2020).
