Hon. John E. Greenwood (Ret.) was a judge for the Southeast Judicial District of North Dakota. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Ed Schafer in 1999. Greenwood retired in 2017.
The Southeast Judicial District includes Barnes, Dickey, Eddy, Foster, Griggs, LaMoure, Ransom, Richland, Sargent, Stutsman, and Wells Counties.
Prior to his appointment, he was the State’s Attorney in Stutsman County (1993 to 2002). Greenwood first worked there as an assistant state’s attorney for nine years beginning in 1977. While serving as a prosecutor, he was also in private practice in Jamestown (1975 to 1993).
Greenwood received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota in 1971. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1975. Greenwood was admitted to practice in North Dakota (1975) and the United States District Court for the District of North Dakota (1975).
His memberships have included the North Dakota Legal Counsel for Indigents Commission.
Greenwood and his wife, Susan, have three children. In his free time, he enjoys golf, pickleball, biking, painting, and traveling.
