The Hon. John F. Coffey is an associate justice for the Lowell District Court in Massachusetts. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Charlie Baker on May 10, 2017.
Over the course of his judicial career, Coffey has held assignments in the Natick District Court and the Lowell District Court.
Coffey earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Boston College in 1981. He then completed a J.D. at New England Law in 1986.
After graduating from law school, Coffey began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. He served in that capacity until 1995, at which time he became a sole practitioner in his own private practice.
While in private practice, Coffey sat as a Special Assistant District Attorney for the Offices of the District Attorney in Plymouth County (2002 to 2010) and Bristol County (1998 to 2003). He also spent time as a Special United States Attorney, assisting with a joint state and federal narcotics investigation named “Georgia Peach” (1992).
Coffey was raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston. His father served in the United States Marines before becoming a police officer. Coffey was a resident of Needham at the time of his appointment.
