Judge John O'Donnell - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. John P. O’Donnell is a judge for the Lake County Court of Common Pleas (General Division) in Ohio. He was elected to the bench on November 4, 2014.

O’Donnell received a bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University in 1984. He went on to complete a J.D. at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1987.

After graduating from law school, O’Donnell began his legal career in the public arena. During that time, he worked briefly as an assistant public defender with the Lake County Public Defender’s Office (1987 to 1988), an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office (1988), and an assistant prosecuting attorney with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office (1989 to 1991).

Then, in 1991, O’Donnell joined the law firm of Gibson, Harkins & Brelo Co., LPA, where he worked as an associate for five years. He later became a partner at Lyons & O’Donnell Co., LPA (1996 to 2008) before opening his own private solo practice, John P. O’Donnell, LLC, in 2008. He would maintain his law office until his election to the bench.

In addition to his private practice, O’Donnell was a special prosecuting attorney for the Lake County Prosecutor's Office (1991 to 2011) and was later named chief of the Civil Division in 2011.

His legal career also included serving as a Ward 3 councilman for the City of Willowick (1994 to 2005 and 2013 to 2014), legal counsel for the Lake County ADAMHS Board (1995 to 2011), a prosecutor for Grand River Village (2004 to 2008), and the Director of Law for the City of Willowick (2005 to 2011).
