The Hon. Joseph Bribiesca (Ret.) served as a judge for the 18th Judicial District Court of Kansas. Bribiesca was elected to the bench in 1994. He retired in 2015.
The 18th Judicial District encompasses Sedgwick County. Over the course of his judicial career, Bribiesca was selected to sit with the Kansas Supreme Court to hear oral arguments in a review of a Kansas Court of Appeals decision affirming the dismissal of a Lyon County personal injury case.
Bribiesca earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Wichita State University in 1974. He then completed a J.D. at Washburn University School of Law in 1977.
After graduating from law school, Bribiesca entered into private practice. He supplemented his practice with service as a judge for the Maize Municipal Court, a city attorney for the cities of Mulvane and Wichita, a guardian ad litem for the Sedgwick County Juvenile Court, and a prosecutor of parental severance litigation for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.
His memberships have included the Wesley E. Brown American Inn of Court, the Wichita Bar Association, the Kansas Bar Association, the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association, and the American Judges Association. He has also been involved with the Wichita Area Girl Scout Council, the North Wichita Optimist Club, the Board of Directors of Maize State Bank, and the Midway-Kansas Chapter of the American Red Cross.
He is a recipient of the Howard C. Kline Distinguished Service Award from the Wichita Bar Association (2015) and the Judicial Red Ribbon Award from the DUI Victim Center of Kansas (1998).
Bribiesca is registered as a Democrat.
