The Hon. Judith A. Smith is a judge for the Denver County Court in Colorado. She was appointed to the bench by Mayor Michael Hancock on January 9, 2019.
Prior to her appointment, Smith spent fourteen years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Colorado. During her tenure there, she led the Special Prosecutions Section, and she established the Cybercrime and National Security Section. Before that, she was a deputy district attorney for the Denver District Attorney’s Office, handling both the criminal and rehabilitation aspects of cases for the Juvenile Division.
Smith earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado Boulder. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Colorado Law School and an LL.M. at Columbia Law School.
After graduating from law school, Smith began her legal career as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Wade Brorby of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. She subsequently entered into private practice, working as an associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Denver. In that capacity, she participated in the Denver City Attorney’s Office’s Municipal Court Trial Advocacy Program.
Her memberships have included the Colorado Women’s Bar Association, the Sam Cary Bar Association, the Colorado LGBT Bar Association, and the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association. She has also been involved with Freedom Service Dogs and JFK Partners for Autism.
