The Hon. Julie R. Rubin is a judge for the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. She was appointed to the bench by President Joe Biden on March 30, 2022, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Ellen Lipton Hollander.
Prior to her appointment, Rubin was an associate judge for the Baltimore City Circuit Court in Maryland, a position to which she was named in 2013. During her tenure there, she held assignments on the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee of the Maryland Judicial Council.
Rubin earned a bachelor’s degree in history and Spanish from Mount Holyoke College in 1995. She then completed a J.D. at the University of Maryland, Francis King Carey School of Law in 1998. She is admitted to practice in Maryland (1998), the District of Columbia (1999), Pennsylvania (2008), and New York (2010).
After graduating from law school, Rubin served as an Asper Fellow with the Hon. Marvin J. Garbis of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland in 1998. She then entered into private practice later that year, working as an associate at Shapiro & Olander (1998 to 2000) and Astrachan Gunst Thomas Rubin (2000 to 2005). During her tenure at Astrachan Gunst Thomas Rubin, Rubin handled intellectual property and employment matters, rising through the ranks to become a named partner in 2005.
Her memberships have included the American Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association, the Baltimore City Bar Association, and the Women’s Bar Association of Maryland. She also sat on the Attorney Grievance Commission and the Commission on Judicial Disabilities as well as the Board of Directors of the Maryland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Board of Trustees of the Simon E. Sobeloff Law Society.
Rubin was born in Baltimore, Maryland, where she attended the Bryn Mawr School. She is the former co-host of Midday on the Law with Dan Rodricks, which aired on WYPR 88.1 FM (2010 to 2013).
