Hon. Katherine Cooper is a judge for the Maricopa County Superior Court in Arizona. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jan Brewer in September 2011, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Brian Hauser (Ret.).
During her judicial tenure, Cooper has held assignments in the Civil, Criminal, and Family Courts.
Prior to joining the bench, she had worked as an assistant city attorney for the Scottsdale City Attorney’s Office since 2007. During her tenure there, Cooper handled civil litigation cases, including wrongful death, civil rights, police negligence, and property damage.
Before that, she worked as a private practice attorney in Phoenix. During that time, Cooper was a partner in Schneider & Onofry (2001 to 2007) and Jennings, Strouss & Salmon (1994 to 1997). She first joined the firm as an associate in 1987.
Cooper received a B.A. from the University of Virginia in 1984. She went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Virginia School of Law in 1987.
Cooper was admitted to practice in Arizona (1987), the United States Claims Court (1988), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (1987).
Her civic involvement has included the Lay Ministries at the Historic First Church in Phoenix (Director) and the Arizona Humane Society’s Second Chance Program (volunteer).
