The Hon. Kevan J. Cunningham (Ret.) served as First Justice of Taunton District Court in Massachusetts. Cunningham was appointed to the bench by former Governor Bill Weld in 1996. He retired in 2019.
Over the course of his judicial career, Cunningham sat as the Regional Administrative Justice for the Massachusetts District Court.
Cunningham earned a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University in 1978. He then completed a J.D. at Suffolk University Law School in 1981.
After graduating from law school, Cunningham began his legal career as an assistant district attorney for the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. He served in that capacity until 1987, at which time he became Assistant Attorney General and Chief of the Narcotics Division for the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. Then, in 1991, Cunningham was named Second Assistant District Attorney for the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
His memberships have included the Massachusetts Judges Conference, the Massachusetts Bar Foundation, the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Bristol County Bar Association, the Taunton Bar Association, and the Plymouth County Bar Association.
He is a recipient of the Peter Muse Dedication Award from the Quincy Bar Association (2019), the Massachusetts Trial Court Perseverance Award (2005), and the St. Thomas More Distinguished Jurist Award (2008).
Cunningham was born in Norwood, Massachusetts. When not presiding over legal matters, he enjoys reading and sports.
