The Hon. L. Eugene Hunt, Jr. is a judge for the 19th District Court of Michigan. He was elected to the bench on November 8, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. William Hultgren.
Hunt was instrumental in the establishment of a Veterans Treatment Court (2018) and a Drug and Sobriety Treatment Court (2019) for the 19th District Court.
Prior to his election, Hunt served as a court appointed attorney for the 19th District Court. In that capacity, he represented indigent defendants, handling more than 10,000 cases in the Dearborn Court.
Hunt earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Michigan, Dearborn in 1982. He then completed a J.D. at Wayne State University Law School in 1985.
His memberships have included the Dearborn Exchange Club, the Optimist Club, the American Legion, the League of Women Voters, and the Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council.
Born in Carthage, Tennessee, Hunt was raised in Dearborn, Michigan, where he attended Woodworth Middle School, Fordson High School, and Henry Ford Community College. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving in the military police in Brunswick, Minnesota. Hunt and his wife, Carol, have two daughters and four grandchildren.
