Hon. Laura A. Pietan is a judge for the 10th Judicial District Court of Minnesota in Washington County. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Mark Dayton on February 4, 2019, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. John R. McBride (Ret.).
The 10th Judicial District includes Anoka, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Pine, Sherburne, Washington, and Wright Counties.
Prior to her appointment, Pietan led the Criminal Division as a deputy city attorney for the City of St. Paul. Before that, she served as a senior assistant city attorney in the city’s Civil Division. Pietan joined the office in 2004.
She received a B.A. in social work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1991. After graduating from university, Pietan worked as a community organizer with the United Farm Workers in California and then spent ten years as a social worker in Seattle before completing a J.D. at Seattle University School of Law. She was admitted to practice in Minnesota in 2004.
Pietan chaired the Ujamaa Place and Better Futures Advisory Committee and was a member of the Minnesota Women Lawyers and the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys.
