The Hon. Laurie A. Fontaine (Ret.) served as a judge for the North Dakota Northeast Judicial District. Fontaine was elected to the bench in 1998. She retired on January 29, 2021, and returned to private practice.
The Northeast Judicial District includes Benson County, Bottineau County, Cavalier County, McHenry County, Pembina County, Pierce County, Ramsey County, Renville County, Rolette County, Towner County, and Walsh County.
Fontaine earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from Mayville State University in 1978. She then completed a J.D. at the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1983.
After graduating from law school, Fontaine entered into private practice in Pembina County. She worked in that capacity until 1987, at which time she became the State’s Attorney for Pembina County.
Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Fontaine was raised in Cavalier. She and her husband, Bob, have three children.
