The Hon. Luke M. Berger is a judge for the 5th Judicial District Court of Montana. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Steve Bullock in 2017, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Loren Tucker.
The 5th Judicial District includes Beaverhead, Jefferson, and Madison Counties. Berger splits his time between all three counties.
Prior to beginning his judicial career, Berger was a deputy county attorney in Lewis and Clark County since 2012. Before that, he was an attorney in private practice, a deputy city attorney for the City of Helena (2010 to 2012), and a judicial law clerk for the Montana Supreme Court (2008 to 2009).
Berger received a B.A. in philosophy from Carroll College in 2004. He then joined AmeriCorps as a volunteer for Catholic Charities in Baltimore, Maryland, where he helped operate a local soup kitchen. Following his volunteer work, Berger went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Montana, Alexander Blewett III School of Law, in 2008.
He served three terms on the Board of Trustees of the State Bar of Montana, including as a chair of the Board. Berger also sat on the Board of Trustees for the Friendship Center.
He was named Young Alumni of the Year by Carroll College (2014) and is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the State Bar of Montana (2017).
Raised in Dillon, Montana, Berger attended Beaverhead County High School. He and his wife, Alexis, have three children. When not presiding over legal matters, Berger enjoys watching high school and college sports, bird hunting, conversing about the state’s history, and spending time with his family.
