The Hon. Maria L. Oxholm is a judge for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. She was appointed to the bench on August 18, 2016.
Prior to her appointment, Oxholm was a judge for the Third Circuit Court of Michigan, a position to which she was named by former Governor John Engler in 2002. She held assignments as the Presiding Judge of the Family Division, the Civil Division, and the Business Court. Before that, she spent time as a judge for the 36th District Court of Michigan (1999 to 2002).
Oxholm earned a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1988.
After graduating from law school, Oxholm began her legal career as a law clerk for the Immigration Division of the United States Department of Justice. She served in that capacity until 1989, at which time she became an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. During her tenure there, she specialized in child abuse and domestic violence prosecutions.
Her memberships have included the boards of SER-Metro and the William Booth Legal Aid Clinic.
