The Hon. Martine G. Carroll (Ret.) served as an associate justice for the Lawrence District Court in Massachusetts. Carroll was appointed to the bench by former Governor Deval Patrick on November 3, 2009, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Kevin M. Herlihy. She retired on July 11, 2020.
Over the course of her judicial career, Carroll has also held assignments as an associate judge of the Framingham District Court.
Carroll earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Boston University in 1972. She then completed a J.D. at New England Law in 1980.
After graduating from law school, Carroll entered into private practice, working as a partner at Smith, Sullivan, Carroll, Valentine and Malay. During her tenure there, she was an in-house trial attorney for St. Paul Insurance Company, trying cases involving medical malpractice, personal injury, products liability, and workers’ compensation claims.
Then, in 1992, Carroll was selected to serve as an administrative judge for the Massachusetts Department of Industrial Accidents. She worked in that capacity for seventeen years, rising through the ranks to become an Administrative Law Judge (Appellate) (1998) and a Senior Judge and Head of the Division of Dispute Resolution (2007).
Her memberships have included the American Judges Association and the National Association of Women Judges.
Carroll was a resident of Newton at the time of her appointment.
