The Hon. Michael P. Rhoads is a judge for the San Francisco County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Gavin Newsom on December 23, 2022, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Angela M. Bradstreet.
Prior to his appointment, Rhoads was chambers attorney to Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye of the Supreme Court of California, a position to which he was named in 2018. He has also taught California Parole Hearings & Litigation at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.
Rhoads earned a bachelor’s degree in English, political science, and philosophy from Santa Clara University in 2006. He then completed a J.D. at the George Washington University School of Law in 2009. He was admitted to the State Bar of California that same year.
After graduating from law school, Rhoads began his legal career as a law clerk to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office. He served in that capacity until 2010, at which time he joined the California Attorney General’s Office as a deputy attorney general. Then, in 2012, Rhoads became a deputy legal affairs secretary in the California Office of the Governor.
Rhoads returned to the California Attorney General’s Office in 2015. He spent the next year as a deputy attorney general, eventually leaving to become a staff attorney for the Supreme Court of California.
Raised in San Diego, California, Rhoads was a resident of San Francisco County at the time of his appointment. When not presiding over legal proceedings, he enjoys swimming, hiking, cooking, and baking.
He is registered as a Democrat.
