Hon. Monica J. Gomez is a judge for the 4th Judicial District Court of Colorado. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Jared Polis on May 27, 2022, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Deborah J. Grohs (Ret.).
The 4th Judicial District includes El Paso and Teller Counties.
Prior to her appointment, Gomez sat as a judge for the El Paso County Court, having been appointed to the seat by Governor Polis in 2019. As such, she heard criminal and civil matters. Before that, she presided as a judge for the Douglas County Court in the 18th Judicial District (2007 to 2019).
Gomez joined the County Court bench after handling workers’ compensation matters at the Law Office of Steven U. Mullens (2006 to 2007).
Her legal career also includes serving as a magistrate for the El Paso County Drug Court (2005 to 2007), an assistant attorney general assigned to the employment division of the Colorado Attorney General’s Office (2003 to 2004), a deputy state public defender in Douglas County (2001 to 2003) and El Paso County (1993 to 1998), an associate at Susan Fuller & Associates (2001), and a law clerk to the Hon. Gilbert Martinez (1992 to 1993).
In addition, Gomez taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law.
Gomez received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1984. She went on to complete a J.D. at the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1992.
She has mentored high school students in moot court competitions and was a past president of the Hispanic Bar Association in El Paso County.
