Hon. Norman G. Anderson (Ret.) was a judge for the East Central Judicial District of North Dakota. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jack Dalrymple in 2013 to fill a newly-created position. Anderson retired on January 31, 2018.
The East Central Judicial District includes Cass, Steele, and Traill Counties.
Prior to his appointment, he had worked for six years as a part-time contract hearing officer for North Dakota Workforce Safety and Insurance and the Office of Administrative Hearings (2007 to 2013). Before that, Anderson was an Assistant United States Attorney with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of North Dakota (1983 to 2007). He spent the last ten years of his tenure there as senior litigation counsel, tasked with managing major crime cases. Anderson retired as a federal prosecutor in 2007.
He received a B.A. in philosophy from the University of North Dakota (1975) and an M.A. in philosophy from the University of Minnesota (1977). Anderson went on to complete a J.D. at the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1982. While a law student, he was an intern for the Grand Forks County State’s Attorney’s Office.
After graduating from law school, Anderson began his legal career as a law clerk with the North Dakota Supreme Court (1982 to 1983).
Before pursuing his education, he served in the United States Marine Corps (1969 to 1971).
Following his retirement from the bench, Anderson became an administrative law judge for the Office of Administrative Hearings in North Dakota in 2019.
