The Hon. R. Todd Garbett is a magistrate for the 6th Judicial District Magistrate Division of Idaho. He was appointed to the bench by the District Magistrate Commission of the 6th Judicial District in September 2012.
The 6th Judicial District includes Bannock, Bear Lake, Caribou, Franklin, Oneida, and Power Counties. Garbett has held assignments in Franklin and Bear Lake Counties.
During his judicial tenure, he is credited with helping to establish the first treatment courts in Franklin and Bear Lake Counties and is a founding staff member of the Franklin County Drug Court and the Bear Lake County Recovery Court.
Prior to his appointment, Garbett was the Prosecuting Attorney in Franklin County since 2004. He began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. William H. Woodland in Bannock County until moving into private practice at a small law firm in Preston.
Garbett received a bachelor’s degree from Weber State University in 1995. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Montana, Alexander Blewett III School of Law. Garbett was admitted to practice in Idaho in 1999.
He is a past president of the Preston Kiwanis Club, the Preston Area Chamber of Commerce, and the 6th District Bar Association. Garbett also served as chairman of the Idaho Child Support Guidelines Committee and as a member of the Court Assistance Office Committee and the Idaho Judicial Council.
He and his wife, Jennifer, have six children. In his free time, he enjoys outdoor activities such as off-road motorcycling, camping, water sports, and hiking. Garbett has accompanied his children on the twenty-seven-mile rim-to-rim day hike through the Grand Canyon and the sixteen-mile Zion Narrows hike. They also hiked through the deepest slot canyon at Buckskin Gulch.
A racquetball enthusiast, he helped create the first racquetball court in Bear Lake, dubbed the Bear Lake Supreme Court.
