The Hon. Robert E. Whelan (Ret.) was a justice of the New York State Supreme Court in the Eighth Judicial District.
Prior to joining the bench, Whelan was the comptroller for the City of Buffalo (1976 to 1989).
Whelan received a bachelor’s degree from Canisius College. He went on to complete a J.D. at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law.
His memberships include the New York State Supreme Court Justice’s Association for the Eighth Judicial District (past-president and executive committee member), the American Bar Association’s Judicial Administration Division, the New York State Bar Association’s Judicial Administration Division, the National Conference of State and Trial Judges of the American Bar Association, and the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law Alumni Association (board of directors).
Whelan served as chairman of the Arthritis Foundation Telethon and the National March of Dimes Telethon. He also served as chairman of the Buffalo and Erie County Convention Center and the United Negro College Fund.
