The Hon. Stacy L. Pettit is a judge for the Albany County Surrogate’s Court in the Third District of New York. She was elected to the bench in 2015.
Pettit earned a B.A. in English from Vassar College in 1981. She then completed a J.D. from Albany Law School in 1984.
After graduating from law school, Pettit began her legal career as an attorney in private practice, specializing in trusts and estates. While in private practice, she was selected to serve as an examiner of guardianships for the Albany County Surrogate’s Court from 1998 to 1999. The following year, she left her private practice in order to clerk for the Albany County Surrogate’s Court, quickly rising through the ranks to become its chief clerk in 2001. Then, in 2012, she began working as a principal appellate court attorney for the Third Department of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. She worked in that capacity until her election to the bench.
Pettit has served as vice president of the New York State Surrogates’ Association and the New York State Association of Chief Clerks of the Surrogate’s Court. She has also chaired the Surrogate’s Court Committee of the Trusts and Estates Section of the New York State Bar Association. Her other memberships have included the Albany County Bar Association, the Capital District Women’s Bar Association, and the New York State Bar Association.
She is registered as a Democrat.
