Hon. Susan F. Maven is a judge for the Atlantic/Cape May County Superior Court (Vicinage 1) in New Jersey. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Don DiFrancesco in 2001.
Over the course of her judicial career, Maven has held assignments in the Cape May County Criminal Division (2008) and the Atlantic County Family Division (2001 to 2008, 2010 to 2012, and 2016 to present) and Criminal Division (2008 to 2010). Then, in 2012, Maven was appointed to the Appellate Division (2012 to 2016), where she remained until rejoining the Family Division in Atlantic County in 2016. During her tenure in the Appellate Division, she presided in Parts A (2012 to 2013), D (2013 to 2015), and E (2015 to 2016). Maven also held a temporary assignment in Part F of the Appellate Division in 2012.
Prior to her appointment, she was working as a commissioner of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, a position to which she was appointed by former Governor Christine Todd Whitman in 1998. During her tenure there, Maven served as vice-chair in 2000.
Before joining the Commission, she was general counsel for the Atlantic County Improvement Authority (1990 to 1998) and the condemnation commissioner for Atlantic County (1988 to 1993).
Over the course of her legal career, Maven worked briefly as a development coordinator for the Atlantic County Transportation Authority and also practiced as an associate at Horn, Kaplan, Goldberg, Gorny & Daniels.
She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1983. Maven went on to complete a J.D. at Temple University, James E. Beasley School of Law in 1987.
She has sat as a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court’s Committee on Minority Concerns (chair), Committee on Access and Fairness (vice-chair), and Committee on Complementary Dispute Resolution.
