Hon. Tristan J. Van de Streek is a judge for the East Central Judicial District of North Dakota. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Doug Burgum in 2019, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Douglas R. Herman (Ret.).
The East Central Judicial District includes Cass, Steele, and Traill Counties.
Prior to his appointment, Van de Streek spent eleven years as an assistant state’s attorney with the Cass County State’s Attorney's Office (2007 to 2018). In addition to his work as a prosecutor, he trained law enforcement on investigative practices and courtroom procedures, served as an advisor to the county on contractual issues, and developed a domestic violence multi-disciplinary team that provided treatment and education for domestic violence offenders with the help of law enforcement, as well as probation and service providers.
Before his position there, Van de Streek served as an assistant city attorney and city prosecutor in Fargo (2005 to 2007) and an assistant city attorney in Minot (2003 to 2007). He was also an associate at Van de Streek & Ward.
He received a B.A. in history from Minot State University in 2000. Van de Streek went on to complete a J.D. at the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2003.
His memberships have included the Cass County Bar Association and the North Dakota State’s Attorneys Association.
Van de Streek has been involved with his church as a youth group leader.
