The Hon. William A. Herauf is a judge for the North Dakota Southwest Judicial District. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor John Hoeven on August 2, 2006, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Ron Hilden.
The Southwest Judicial District includes Adams County, Billings County, Bowman County, Dunn County, Golden Valley County, Hettinger County, Slope County, and Stark County.
Herauf earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of North Dakota in 1979. He then completed a J.D. at the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1982.
After graduating from law school, Herauf entered into private practice, spending time at Mackoff Kellogg and Reichert & Herauf in Dickinson. He supplemented his practice with service as an assistant city attorney for the City of Dickinson (1985 to 1990) as well as the State’s Attorney for Slope County.
His memberships have included the Stark County Bar Association, the Slope County Bar Association, and the Dunn County Bar Association. He also sat as president of the North Dakota Trial Lawyers Association and chairman of the Disciplinary Board of the North Dakota Supreme Court.
Born in Dickinson, North Dakota, Herauf attended Dickinson High School. He attends the United Methodist Church.
