Judge Beth A. Allen - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Beth A. Allen is a judge for the 4th Judicial District Circuit Court of Oregon in Multnomah County. She joined the bench in 2013.

Allen has presided on the One Family-One Judge family law bench.

Prior to beginning her judicial career, she was president of Beth Allen Law PC, where she practiced alongside her sister, Sara Allen. She opened the firm in 2006. Before that, Allen was an associate at Tonkon Torp LLP (1998 to 2002) and Lane Powell PC (2002 to 2005). Her practice included representing LGBT clients and their families and friends, as well as estate planning, adoptions, donor and surrogacy agreements, domestic partner and prenuptial agreements, divorce and custody, and small business formation matters.

Allen received a B.A. in speech communications from Portland State University. She went on to complete a J.D. at Willamette University College of Law in 1996. While a law student, Allen was instrumental in helping to found WILLOW, an organization that supported LGBT law students.

After graduating from law school, Allen began her legal career as a clerk to the Hon. Mary Deits with the Oregon Court of Appeals (1996 to 1998).

She was admitted to practice in Oregon (1996) and Washington (2000).

Her memberships included the Oregon Women Lawyers, the Oregon Gay and Lesbian Law Association, Q Center, the Portland Area Business Alliance, and the Basic Rights Oregon Legal Group.

In 2017, Allen received the Community Service Award from the LGBT Bar Association and the Chief Justice’s Juvenile Court Champion Award.

Allen, one of five children, attended South Umpqua High School. Growing up, she enjoyed working on motorcycles at her father’s Harley Davidson shop. Allen later joined the United States Army. During her service, she served as a journalist for a local newspaper.

She and her partner, Christine Cress, have one son.
