Judge Charles E. Atwell - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Charles E. Atwell (Ret.) served as a judge for the 16th Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri. Atwell was appointed to the bench by former Governor Mel Carnahan in 1996. He retired on December 1, 2012, and returned to private practice as a mediator and arbitrator.

Atwell held assignments as the Presiding Judge of the 16th Judicial Circuit (2011 to 2012). He also sat as Chief Judge of the Family Court (2008 to 2010) and Chief Administrative Judge for the Criminal Courts (2000 to 2001).

Prior to his appointment, Atwell was a partner at Wyrsch, Atwell, Mirikian, Lee & Hobbs, a position to which he was named in 1984. He specialized in civil litigation, handling commercial, personal injury, and white collar criminal matters. Before that, he briefly worked as an assistant United States attorney in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri (1983 to 1984).

Atwell earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Kansas in 1972. He spent the next few years teaching history at Southeast High School in Kansas City before completing a J.D. at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 1978.

After graduating from law school, Atwell began his legal career as an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office. He held assignments in the Trial Division and the Career Criminal Unit until 1981, at which time he entered into private practice as an associate at Koeingsdorf, Kutnetsky, Wyrsch & Stites.

His memberships have included the Missouri Judicial College and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. He served on the Committee on Gender and Justice and the Committee on Procedures in Criminal Cases for the Supreme Court of Missouri, and he has been actively involved with the Williams Education Fund and the 24th Street Project Boys and Girls Club.

He is a recipient of the Distinguished Counselor Award from the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association (2016). He has maintained an AV rating with Martindale Hubbell for over thirty years.

Atwell attends Second Presbyterian Church in Kansas City.
