Judge Cheryl B. Moss - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Cheryl B. Moss (Ret.) was a judge for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County, Nevada. She was elected to the bench in 2000 and was retained in subsequent elections. Her last term ended in January 2021.

Moss received a B.A. in political science and government from George Washington University in 1989. She went on to earn a J.D. from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in 1994.

Moss served as a law clerk for Stein, Mitchell, Muse, Cipollone & Beato, LLP from 1986 to 1994. She also served a clerkship with the Hon. John H. Bayly, Jr. with the Superior Court of the District of Columbia (1994 to 1995) and was an intern in the Misdemeanors Branch of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C.

After relocating to Nevada, Moss entered into solo practice at her own law firm in 1997. Her scope of practice included litigation issues involving domestic relations cases and personal injury claims. She remained at her practice until her election to the bench.

During her tenure on the bench, Moss helped initiate a pilot program on problem gambling assessments for parents involved in child custody cases. In addition, she presided over the Gambling Treatment Diversion Court as well as worked with the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling. She also presided over Night Court and volunteered for 24-hour Temporary Protection Order fax duty.

Her other volunteer work included judging the UNLV Law School Moot Court Competition, the High School Mock Trial Competition, and the Trial By Peers Program.

Her memberships included the Nevada District Judges Association, National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, Nevada State Bar, and the Clark County Bar Association. Moss also served on the Clark County Library Board of Trustees and was a member of the Civil Order Enforcement Task Committee.

Moss received the Women of Distinction Award from the National Association of Women Business Owners of Southern Nevada (2014), the Golden Pearl Award from the Filipino American Heritage Foundation of Nevada (2013), the Shannon L. Bybee Award from the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling (2009), and the Shining Star Award from the Clark County Pro Bono Project (1999).

After leaving the bench, she served as an independent educator for the Gambling Treatment Diversion Court.
