Biography

The Hon. David J. Allen is a judge for the Third Circuit Court in Michigan. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jennifer Granholm on December 11, 2003, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Kym Worthy.

Prior to his appointment, Allen spent ten years as an attorney in private practice, specializing in complex commercial litigation.

Allen earned a bachelor’s degree (1988) and a master’s degree (1989) from the University of Michigan. He spent the next few years working in marketing at The Ann Arbor News before completing a J.D. at the Detroit College of Law in 1993. He is admitted to practice in Michigan (1993) and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (1993).

After graduating from law school, Allen began his legal career as an associate at Kitch Drutchas Wagner Valitutti & Sherbrook in Detroit, where he handled the defense of medical malpractice matters. He then joined a small law firm, where he worked for several years before opening his own private practice as a sole practitioner.

His memberships have included the Board of Directors of the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services and the Board of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit.

A lifelong resident of Detroit, Allen is one of five brothers, two of whom he practiced alongside at Allen Brothers. He lived on the west side of Detroit, in a neighborhood populated with the families of city police officers and firefighters. His father, Francis, worked for the Detroit Police Department, rising through the ranks to become its Deputy Chief. His mother, Mary Lou, was a registered nurse. Allen and his wife, Colleen, have three sons.
